Yiya Engineering Solutions is a Ugandan-registered nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase resilience and creative problem solving in African youth through experiential STEM education. Our goal is to inspire and equip the next generation of African innovators and inventors!
Yiya’s innovative remote STEM program is called Yiya AirScience, which mimics an online course, but is delivered through radio and keypad phones with no need for smart devices or the internet. The platform built for this remote learning program, which will host other educational content from clients, is Yiya AirLearning. Yiya AirLearning will be the first Massive Open OFFLINE Course (MOOffC) platform for last-mile populations that do not have access to internet or smart devices, in order to make engaging, high quality education accessible, and close the gap for the millions of youth who aren’t in school.
Yiya is searching for a highly analytical and qualified Financial Officer to join our team. In this position, you will be responsible for the financial health of the organization by overseeing our financial procedures. To succeed in this role, you must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of financial policies, procedures, and systems. In addition to being an excellent communicator, our ideal candidate will also have outstanding analytical and time management abilities. As Finance Officer, you will be part of a world class team in transforming the ways youth in Africa access and engage with educational material.
Job Description
This position will support the management of accounting systems, policies, and procedures in compliance with accounting standards, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), donor’s rules and regulations, and legal requirements.
As part of the finance team, you will help coordinate daily financial activities through the duties outlined below.
Key Responsibilities
Handle the compilation of periodical budgets and the preparation of budget variance analyses and projections.
Oversight on all cash/bank transactions, providing full accountability on a weekly basis.
Data entry of all transactions into the QuickBooks accounting platform.
Manage accounts payable, and ensure that the organization’s obligations are duly settled.
Ensure accuracy of all data required for processing financial transactions.
Conduct weekly bank reconciliations and update the accounting system accordingly.
Preparation of monthly payrolls, and ensuring that all statutory deductions such as Withholding Tax (WHT), Pay as You Earn (PAYE) and National Social Security Fund (NSSF) are promptly remitted to the relevant statutory authorities.
Participate in the improvement of the accounting system and internal controls to guarantee operational efficiency.
Assist in conducting training on financial matters for the project team as needed.
Assist in the preparation of project budgets and annual budgets.
Handle the preparation of monthly and project/donor-specific financial reports.
Perform period-end accounting procedures.
Ensure that all expenditures and disbursements are made in compliance with Yiya Engineering Solutions policies and procedures and donor requirements, and that are supported by fiscally valid documents.
Support the preparation of consolidated reporting schedules for all donors and support the project teams to comply with reporting requirements.
Engage with other departments to become familiar with organizational and program goals and implementation to understand how the budget aligns with the Mission, and provide your expertise and support when applicable. You may be asked to support other departments outside of your role in Finance, including travel to the field, in order to support the Organization’s success.
Accomplish other tasks as may arise in the finance department.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with bias in Finance and Accounting (or an equivalent) from a recognized awarding Institution.
On-going study of a professional qualification in Accountancy, such as ACCA, CPA, is an added advantage.
Experience and Skills
A minimum of two (2) years working experience in an accounting or finance role, preferably in a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
Experience in the use of an accounting software, preferably QuickBooks.
Proficiency in management and administration.
Exceptional understanding of bookkeeping and generally accepted accounting practices.
In-depth knowledge of financial regulations and accounting processes.
Strong attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and experience working and effectively communicating with senior management.
